CBD Mocktails 101
The sober movement has been picking up speed the last few years and we’re totally here for it!
How often do you laugh about your ability to go out drinking all night in our 20’s and still make it through the next day with ease, but then we get a little older and have a couple of kids and next thing you know consuming a bit too much alcohol leads to a day of hell with no one to cover your parenting shifts. Let this happen a few too many times and you’ll be looking for something other than an alcoholic beverage to help you forget about your adulting woes for a while so you can have a little fun but also something that allows you to thrive the next day when your responsibilities wake up with the sun. While we can’t help you with your kids (because we have our own to keep alive), we can help you trade that wine in for weed and skip the hangover for the high!
So..What is a CBD Mocktail?
A CBD infused mocktail is a super fun sip-able beverage that’s usually pretty & sophisticated, giving you the feeling that you’re indulging in a fancy cocktail, only instead of it containing alcohol it is infused with healthy, endocannabinoid supporting cannabinoids from your favorite CBD oil, tincture, mushroom enhanced CBD tincture or sugar infused with cannabis. These tasty concoctions can soothe your nerves, alleviate anxiety and relieve insomnia without the toxic side effects of alcohol. In fact, there are preliminary studies that are examining the potential benefits of cannabidiol to increase the health of the liver. While creating a mocktail does take a little skill in mixology once you’ve learned the basics, you’ll be concocting your own flavor combos in no time!
CBD Tincture vs. CBD Oil
The difference between a CBD tincture and a CBD oil is existent but also non-existent. A tincture is essentially a maceration of any medicinal plant into a solvent, with the most popular solvent being alcohol however fat is commonly used for CBD products due to the beneficial properties of cannabis being are lipophilic meaning they depend on fat to become available to the body, other solvents used for tinctures are vinegar or glycerin. For the purpose of CBD mocktails it is imperative you know what is in the little bottle you’re going to use! If it is alcohol or an alcohol/fat blend, then you’re going to be able to mix it with several different liquid options easier, but if it is mostly oil it will need to be emulsified in some sort of fatty substance or else it’ll just sit on the top of your liquid. When using oil-based tinctures think of something like a non-alcoholic white Russian or even coffees, alcohol-based tinctures however will mix with seltzer waters, sodas, and juices. How does CBD make you feel?
If you’ve not tried CBD products yet, then you may be wondering how does CBD makes you feel, and can it really take the place of my alcohol? CBD and alcohol actually have similarities in the way they make you feel in the moment however the long-term effects on your health are vastly different. Both help with relaxation and are commonly used for social anxiety, but while alcohol is a depressant, CBD is neither a depressant nor a stimulant. Note, THC in “full-spectrum” cannabis flower does act as a depressant in too high of doses. Note, all of Society’s Plants products stay within the legal limit of THC percentages based on the 2018 Farm Bill. While alcohol, lower inhibitions and impairs judgment in large amounts, CBD world in symphony with your body’s needs gently balancing your endocannabinoid system, leading to a sense of calm, less pain and inflammation, and a night of deeper sleep.
CBD and Alcohol
Consuming CBD in lieu of alcohol will ensure you’re preventing the known harmful effects of alcohol, but if you’re not quite ready for the sober life, it is worth it to note that a few animal studies have also shown that CBD may mitigate neurodegenerative and oxidative liver damage associated with alcohol use. Another study from 2014 found that rodents given CBD 30 minutes prior to being given alcohol showed significantly less oxidative stress on the liver than rodents who had just been given alcohol. Both alcohol and CBD have sedated effects and the combination will definitely lead to impaired motor skills, delayed judgment, and drowsiness so we recommend being extremely mindful when consuming together and we will always promote CBD over alcoholic beverages as CBD is non-addictive, non-intoxicating, and remarkably non-toxic. Additionally taking CBD helps regulate your sleep patterns while alcohol inhibits the body’s ability to enter REM sleep. We also highly recommend our Dream, Mushroom Enhanced CBD Tincture with Melatonin, to help you drift to dreamland.
